THE CORNER PROJECT
Artist-led main street revitalization
The mission of the Corner Project is to revitalize a traditional working-class neighborhood main street on three blocks of Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago's Avondale neighborhood between Kimball and Central Park. It is based on the belief that the scale and character of these 100-year old buildings embody the heritage of mom-and-pop entrepreneurs, individual property ownership, and local employment which are essential ingredients for a culturally diverse, prosperous and equitable 21st century urban village.
Lynn Basa began The Corner Project in 2017 to contribute what she could as an artist to benefit the people and places immediately beyond the walls of her storefront studio at the corner of Milwaukee Avenue and Drake Street. The first year was spent on building relationships, identifying resources, and researching other successful community infrastructure projects. The second phase, begun in Fall 2018, is focused on mobilizing those relationships and resources toward creative, achievable actions that will encourage equitable economic and cultural development.
