June 21 - July 19, 2015
For one month, thisPlace turned being at home into an art form. It transformed Corner gallery into an all-white, look-through, temporary home for Chicago’s Avondale and Logan Square residents. It hoped to be a space to know and be known by those of us who share a neighborhood but are not truly neighbors; a momentary resting point where locals with various viewpoints can come to a single space and learn from one another.
Viewers were encouraged to participate with the piece from the outside and knock on the gallery door for invitation to engage. Artist-organized dinner companions were on display nightly between participants and community members who are invested in its transformations. Walking Tours from longtime local residents were free and open to the public each Sunday at 3pm and various community building events also popped up in the space throughout the month.
Walking tours with longtime local residents -- every Sunday, 3pm
Closing Reception -- July 19, 3-6pm
About the Artist:
Kimmy Noonen is a Chicago-based artist and longtime Logan Square resident. While working within multi-arts and performance structures, her practice orbits around the development of living pieces, often delegated to the public sphere, and ultimately asked to grow organically through interactions which cannot be pre-scripted. Her practice attempts to engage in a conversation about authorship, unseeable materials, and the function of consciousness in everyday activities. Her projects seek the opportunity to challenge and understand how, or when, action becomes art.
Noonen holds her MFA from the University of Chicago and worked under performance artist Tania Bruguera. She has shown work throughout the Midwest and internationally and was awarded a Chicago Arts Assistance Program (CAAP) grant in 2010. She currently teaches at Judson University, owns & operates a commercial photography business (Kimmy Noonen Photography) and provides full time care for her young daughter. www.kimmynoonen.com
